Finding and keeping talent
A star business needs star employees, and we work hard to attract and retain the best people for our business. We always consider ways of promoting staff internally before making outside appointments. All new staff are put through a detailed induction programme so they hit the ground with a working knowledge of who we are, what we stand for, and how we do our business.
Our group benefits include medical aid, a group provident fund and a group life benefit scheme, a comprehensive wellness programme. Group life is fully funded and includes death, disability, dreaded disease and funeral benefits. Membership of Discovery Health is compulsory for all permanent staff members.
If we need to change terms and conditions of employment for any reason, we consult affected staff and ensure mutual understanding leads to a mutually beneficial outcome. We use skills development plans and key performance indicators to drive delivery and twice a year, we assess what each staff member has achieved in a performance management system that is linked to remuneration and incentives.
At regular intervals throughout the year, we co-ordinate employee and social wellness days at our head office. The wellness days allow staff to undergo various health checks, and charity support days allow the organisation and its employees to support the needy. We conduct blood drives in partnership with the South African National Blood Transfusion Service, and support both Women’s Day and World Aids Day.
Employment Equity
We promote and support equal opportunity and fair treatment of all staff in accordance with our employment equity policy. Our recruitment policies and procedures enable staff and external candidates to compete for jobs and promotional opportunities in an equitable environment, where the sole criterion is merit based.
Our Employment Equity Committee meets quarterly to discuss and review barriers to employment and affirmative action initiatives.
Our subsidiary companies report to the Social and Ethics Committee on their employment equity performance relative to targets.
Our group continues to be non-unionised.
