Job Purpose

The key purpose of the Product Manager is to leverage insights to identify products that align to the company portfolio, and to manage, measure and maintain existing products optimally.


The incumbent is responsible for leveraging insights to identify new products & services, as well as managing, measuring, maintaining and enhancing a portfolio of products that are already in existence.  It is expected that the Product Manager will proactively seek out areas for optimisation through a commercial lens of revenue growth.  In addition, it is expected that a close relationship with internal and external customers will exist in order to ensure product relevance and overall company alignment.

The incumbent will also be responsible for bringing new products to market by driving the full product lifecycle of a portfolio of products already identified in the pipeline. They will work closely with Sales, Technology, Marketing, Finance, Commercial, BI and Support to implement revenue-generating products that extract maximum customer satisfaction.

The Product Manager will be expected to contribute to the pipeline of projects by leveraging market insights to identify and conceive of new and disruptive product ideas.

The ideal candidate must be able to deliver these outputs by executing on multiple activities including:

Research and Analysis:

  • Research and analyse market conditions.
  • Identify key competitor, customer and consumer trends and needs via engaging the Marketing Insights team.
  • Articulate market requirements and opportunities.
  • Identify opportunities for product innovation and product enhancements.
  • Work with sales, operations, technology, finance and marketing regarding product development, maintenance and measurement.

Product Planning and Management:

  • Manage and support product life cycle stages i.e. idea, define, feasibility, develop, pre-launch/pilot, launch, review and close-out.
  • Produce product specifications.
  • Produce product strategies and roadmaps.
  • Gather and document business requirements.
  • Analyse business and technology requirements.
  • Design and map relevant business processes.
  • Perform product feasibility studies.
  • Document close out process, where appropriate.
  • Gather customer insight pertaining to channel requirements, as well as end user requirements.

Product Commercials and SLAs:

  • Maintain a solid commercial understanding of current products.
  • Present commercial models to EXCO for approval when sourcing new service providers.
  • Work with and negotiate with external 3rd parties to assess potentially beneficial partnerships.
  • Work with internal product partners/providers to introduce new products.
  • Conclude Main Agreements and SLAs.
  • Commercialise and institutionalise new products delivered via 3rd Party service providers in consultation with other business areas.
  • Manage relationships with 3rd party service providers in terms of agreed SLAs.

Product Marketing:

  • Support Marketing to develop product marketing plans and event campaigns to generate product awareness and demand.
  • Support the Commercial team with product launch planning and execution.
  • Liaise with advertising and public relations to promote product.
  • Support sales, marketing and operations with the necessary product knowledge and technical expertise.
  • Conduct product presentations.
  • Support the development of sales tools and sales training material.
  • Provide input for marketing collateral development.
  • Supply sales with latest research and marketing information.
  • Support the implementation of the marketing plan in conjunction with all departments.
  • Facilitate driving ongoing improvement in sales and profitability and remediating below-par product performance.

Product Performance:

  • Design appropriate reporting formats to report product performance (commercial and functional).
  • In conjunction with BI, source relevant data, interrogate and interpret data and draw conclusions with respect to product penetration/growth levels across all channels for newly launched products or product enhancements.

Management and Self-Management:

  • Build capability to enhance the skills of self and the team.
  • Lead the performance management process for self and team.
  • Contribute to the overall team through thought leadership.
Requirements of the Job
  • 2 years’ experience as a Product Manager
  • 3 years’ experience managing people
  • Proficient in relevant software applications.
Minimum qualifications
  • A Bachelor’s degree would be advantageous.
  • An MBA or advanced commercial degree would be advantageous.
Competencies / Behaviour
  • Experience within the Financial Services, Telecommunications and/or IT/Digital industries advantageous.
  • Quantitative and business analysis skills advantageous.
  • Knowledge of marketing principles and practices advantageous.
  • Knowledge of business and management principles and practices advantageous.
  • Familiar with the purpose and composition of Legal Agreements, including Service Level Agreements.
